Here's our #LoveFromDisney photo from some of our team at Make-A-Wish International!
*read more information about #LoveFromDisney and how you can get involved in our Disney partnership section below. We are incredibly grateful this festive time of year for the big-hearted employees at Turtle & Hughes who generously supported our Make-a-Wish Mexico Wish Journey with Michelle Stephania, a teenager from Mexico City. "Michi," who needs a kidney transplant, lives with her parents, sister, brother and dog (Teddy) and dreams of being an author. Her wish was to have a laptop and printer so she can "write all of the stories she can image."
Witness the impact of a Wish by watching Michi's video journey and the many surprises along the way!
Our Vice-Chairman of our Board, Jayne Millard, leads as Executive Chairman of Turtle & Hughes where they host an annual event to "adopt" a Wish Child. During this year's month-long journey, their employees came together virtually for several FUN-raisers, and exceeded their goal by over 40 %. Some of the fundraisers included: a Bingo fundraiser, where all of their winners donated their prizes to Make-A-Wish. At a Holiday Cooking and Wine Night, two talented employees (including a Sommelier) donated their time to show us how to prepare a delicious appetizer and choose the perfect wine pairing. Other employees shared their artistic abilities to illustrate a keepsake book we published for Michi of her beautiful poems....(Great ideas for other corporate partners to engage their employees!)
We are especially thankful for Turtle's incredible employees in Mexico for making this Wish Journey extraordinary for Michi and to the staff at Make-A-Wish Mexico and their Volunteer Wish Coordinator, Olivia Zubieta for their help in planning this Journey -- from wish capture to building anticipation to creating lasting memories -- gave everyone involved hope, strength and joy. Lastly, we are grateful to Michi’s favorite writer/poet Andres Ixtepan, who gave one of the greatest gift of all – kindness and compassion.
As 2020 comes to a close, I think we are all breathing a sigh of relief that this year is almost behind us! This has been a time like no other in our lives. The COVID-19 pandemic produced uncertainty, stress and trauma in our communities around the world. Despite the challenges we are all facing every day, this is also a time that is bringing out the best in many people—all of you have demonstrated our values, our purpose and our culture of compassion and collaboration more than ever before. I believe that we can do better than returning to ‘normal’ – I am confident that if we continue to work together, we can build a global organization that will achieve its vision, one day.
We are working diligently to focus on our strategic imperatives, and we have made great progress towards our goals. Our motto is ‘simple strategy with enhanced execution’. We have begun our digital transformation with the launch of our new website and becoming digitally ‘obsessed’ with our recruitment and engagement with our constituents. Our Regional Directors are assimilating to their roles, and our Q1 forecast and budget indicated an overall good start of FY 21. We are positioning Make-A-Wish International for growth and improved performance when the economy recovers.
Our engagement with Disney's holiday campaigns runs across multiple lines of business within the Disney family. It includes the biggest EMEA campaign yet, 'From Our Family To Yours'. The campaign has had a massive media reach across all media channels and has created lucrative income streams for Make-A-Wish.
In an effort to strengthen our commitment to advance the diversity and inclusion in the workplace, I have joined CEO Act!on, which is the largest CEO-driven community made up of over 1300 CEOs of major companies and 120 nonprofit organizations aimed at promoting DE&I (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion). As we are a diverse organization in countries, cultures, ethnicities, we want to take an official position on this issue which is gaining much attention across the world, and especially in the US.
The announcement was made at the end of our virtual conference, that next year’s conference will be 1-5 November 2021, at Disney World in Orlando, Florida! We are looking forward to seeing you there to celebrate our postponed 40th anniversary! Before that conference, we are planning our next international CEO Forum in Amsterdam next Spring. More information to come soon on both in-person meetings!
Above all else, this year we celebrated our 500,000th wish in our 40th year of existence. All of your wishes contributed to that milestone. Thank you for your incredible dedication, perseverance and commitment as we face our new reality. I also want to thank each of you for your continued trust and support. I believe we are more committed than ever to creating a shared success for all.
Best wishes,
Dear Affiliate Community,
We entered 2020 with optimism having completed the move of the Make-A-Wish International headquarters from Phoenix to Amsterdam, appointed a new CEO and welcomed new leadership at Make-A-Wish International and several Affiliates. None of us could have anticipated what lay ahead. 2020 has been a most challenging year for the world and Make-A-Wish has not been spared. Make-A-Wish International and many Affiliates faced significant financial hardship, and most importantly, severe limitations in our ability to grant wishes due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The highest priority for Make-A-Wish International and its Board throughout this period, has been to find ways to generate income and to support you, our colleagues around the world. Somehow through all of the challenges, we’ve remained faithfully focused on our mission by adapting, as best we could, by innovatively delivering the wishes to the children, by relying on e-learning to keep us growing professionally, and by depending on each other’s strengths and assets to help us to achieve many accomplishments. I am proud of what we have done together over the last year, and the way you have adapted quickly to an unprecedented set of challenges. A particular highlight this year was the launch of our virtual conference and AGM – another sign that we are resilient and can cope with short-term pressures, while also focusing on reinventing our future.
At the AGM and Board meeting, we reviewed the previous year and looked ahead to 2021. We closed 2020 a little ahead of budget, which was a good performance, given this year’s pandemic, but significantly below last year in the number of wishes granted. We made good progress in executing our transformation, maintaining a stable financial position and prepare to resume growth and improved performance when conditions improve.
At the Board meeting, we also engaged in extensive discussion on the subject of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I). We are augmenting our efforts to foster a culture where everyone feels valued, respected and has the opportunity to grow and succeed. The Board reaffirmed its commitment to DE&I by endorsing the following statement, which has been added to our website:
“At Make-A-Wish® International, diversity and inclusion are part of our DNA. Together, we will continue to build an inclusive culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates the diverse voices of our wish children, families, volunteers, supporters, and employees.
When we say we want to grant the wish of every eligible child, we mean it. And to do that, we want to foster an environment that is diverse and inclusive. They are the key drivers of creativity and innovation that will enable our wish children and families to reap the maximum benefit of a wish.”
Work continues to formalize our Board's succession process to align with the ever-evolving and changing needs of our organization and to identify our strengths, as well as gaps. Some Directors will term out next year and the Nominating Committee has begun building the pipeline of prospective Directors for recruitment. The goal is to create a smooth transition by identifying good prospects early and ensure timely appointment of new Board members. Here again, we rely on timely nominations from Affiliates.
Looking to the future
Like most organizations around the world, life at Make-A-Wish changed dramatically in 2020. The ability to look ahead, adapt and transform quickly, are critical for Make-A-Wish not only to survive, but also to reinvent itself stronger and better than before. We know that 2021 will be another challenging year. I am confident that working together, we shall succeed.

Make-A-Wish International has reviewed the great work that the Affiliate marketing staff is doing on the digital channels, and we want to engage them in our collaborative training and best-practice working group that we call the BRAND CHAMPIONS…this collaborative group was established a couple of years ago, and we are resurrecting it! Topics for the working group will include: storytelling strategy, global drive periods, KPIs and metrics, asset sharing and lots more!
Who and How Much Time is Needed?
The staff person should have the responsibility of your digital marketing campaigns or social media. Make-A-Wish International will engage with them via Zoom calls once a month. We will keep this group at a workable size (approx 6 champions in total, no more than 1 member per Affiliate), and if they were a Brand Champion before, they are more than welcome to rejoin!
This is a group of ‘best-in-class’ marketing professionals in our Affiliate community to help us maintain the highest quality standards, share best practice ideas, and to act as a ‘help desk’ for any questions or challenges which a neighboring Affiliate in your region may encounter.
We need to recruit at least six and up to nine Brand Champions across our regions! Our first Zoom call will be in January. If you'd like to nominate your marketing/digital specialist to the Brand Champions, please contact Sylvia Hopkins, Vice President, Marketing & Digital (Shopkins@worldwish.org). This will be a wonderful achievement to add to their list of professional accomplishments!
Keeping with our digitally obsessed key strategic imperatives and priorities, with a goal of improving and enhancing the digital experience – our brand new website –- was launched last month! The purpose of this upgrade to our website was to increase and improve website conversions, personalization, visual appeal, interactivity, ease of use, mobile experience, and cultural and language diversity. We decided build it using a WordPress solution, as we felt it provided an easy User Interface (UI) for internal management, scaleability, and it was responsive with all the social media and Salesforce integration that we need at this stage. Goal was to keep the cost down with a flexible solution. Please take a look a the new and improved worldwish.org.
Here is a sneak peek into what is in the works for our next World Wish Day global campaign together with Make-A-Wish America. We are sharing the creative brief for the campaign theme and messaging strategy and will be sharing assets in February with our Affiliates, including assets for P2P, corporate sponsorships, major donors and digital engagement. More information and idea sharing on how we can monetize and activate on this campaign will be coming soon. Stay tuned!
As some of you may remember, to mark the 40th Anniversary of our founding wish, Make-A-Wish launched When Stars Align as our overarching messaging strategy. Our goal was to see the 2020-2021 Wishes Need Stars Like You campaign build into a movement encompassing the shining stars all around us—the people and organizations who have the power to bring renewed hope to children, families and communities who need it most. Together, they’ve helped Make-A-Wish transform countless lives over the past 40 years.
But then 2020 happened...it's been a year of learning and new experiences.
Though the fulfillment of many wishes may be delayed, we need to show potential donors that their life-changing impact can start today!
***************
Research has proven that anticipation is one of the greatest sources of human happiness and resilience. It boosts our optimism, our dopamine levels, and can move us to change the course of our lives.
Imagining a future beyond day-to-day circumstances is something they have been doing long before many of us heard the term ‘lock-down’. Helping these children make their imagination a reality is something we can all do. Because for so many of these children – as for all of us – the promise of a wish is so much more than a temporary escape. It’s a wellspring of strength to keep fighting for better days.
Helping more kids find hope is something we all have the power to do!
We must think of Hope as a behavior. It is something that brings energy, strength and healing.
Hope is essential to children living with critical illness and you can unlock its transformative power today. This campaign will have a powerful, vibrant, action-oriented and present tone –the antithesis of passivity.
Watch a clip from Make-A-Wish America's presentation of the Creative Brief for World Wish Day 2021. This presentation was made to the US Chapters last week. Our international marketing team will be reaching out to all Affiliates to connect and collaborate in the next few weeks to discuss and collaborate on assets and how we will integrate with this global campaign in April!
As many of you are already aware, our formal partnership with Airbnb will be ending in December 2020, and we will no longer have access to the Airbnb accommodation credits.
However, Make-A-Wish International and Make-A-Wish America have worked with Airbnb and they will be making a donation of $500,000 to be shared between the two organisations, to be used for the booking of accommodation for wish granting in 2021.
Affiliates will be able to apply to Make-A-Wish International for funding to reimburse the cost of accommodation related to wishes. (For example; travel wish accommodation, accommodation during high seasons, wishes to stay in luxury accommodation, or room makeovers, etc..).
The grant can be used to book any overnight stays in any facility, however you are still encouraged to book accommodation through Airbnb if it is a suitable option.
The process is as follows:
Affiliate to ask for approval via email to Pakamas, ppratumchan@worldwish.org) from Make-A-Wish International to use the grant to book accommodation (i.e. rush wishes, peak season, etc.)
Make-A-Wish International approves via email writing. Approval will not be withheld unless the request does not meet the grant requirements
Affiliates book the accommodation with their own credit card and send the invoice/ receipt to Make-A-Wish International. (Pakamas, ppratumchan@worldwish.org)
Make-A-Wish International reimburse to Affiliate from the Airbnb grant
The grant will be available to Affiliates on a first come first served basis, however total reimbursement for an Affiliate is a maximum of $20,000.
We currently have $89,000 of funding available for Affiliates to access now for accommodation reimbursement. The process will apply as the steps mentioned above. In the first quarter of 2021 we will have a second installment.
We continue to work closely with Airbnb, and we will be reporting back on the use of the grant, so please do share wish stories and pictures.
We are hopeful we will be able to resume our partnership with Airbnb in 2022 once the impact of COVID has improved.
For any questions please contact Fiona Kearney fkearney@worldwish.org
Since 1980, Disney has helped Make-A-Wish® grant more than 140,000 wishes around the world. Every part of The Walt Disney Company helps Make-A-Wish grant life-changing wishes: from the theme parks around the world, to Disney stores, to the television and movie studios.
A reminder that all theme park wishes are currently postponed. Affiliates will be provided 3 months’ notice prior to the resumption of all Theme Park wishes. For full details, and to see the communication from 5th September which still applies, please visit the COVID-19 resource site. Which also includes approved reactive external messaging.
With health & safety as a top priority, all ‘in person’ wish experiences are currently postponed (including any park, resort or Disney store wishes that are granted in person)
Disney, Make-A-Wish America and Make-A-Wish International are working closely together on re-emergence planning and monitoring the situation closely. Disney are looking forward to welcoming wish children back in parks, resorts and stores in the future. Until then, Disney continues to work with us to find innovative ways to support the children whose Disney wishes are waiting due to COVID-19.
Please note:
Rush wishes (‘compassion visits’) are being evaluated on a case-by-case basis
Wishes for Disney store shopping sprees have continued to be granted virtually
Disney are also exploring ways to creatively provide other virtual wish experiences when possible
Please speak with your local Disney teams. And make sure they are aware of the different kinds of pending Disney wishes you currently have in your pipeline.
At Make-A-Wish International, we have shared the international Disney pending wish data with our main Disney global partnership contacts in the US, as well as with key contacts in each region (LatAm, EMEA and APAC).
To celebrate our 40 year partnership, our friends at Disney launched the Wishes Come True Blue Colour Collection in October. Sales from the collection across Europe, the US & Canada, have generated a US $500,000 donation to Make-A-Wish organisations. We have communicated to all Affiliates involved. We are not doing proactive celebratory messaging on social media (yet) about this campaign. Please see here for T&Cs.
Disney also created a special festive campaign, supporting Make-A-Wish. The campaign, which is currently running, features a new animated holiday advert about the festive traditions that connect generations and make lifelong memories . “From Our Family to Yours” features two new lovable characters, Lola and her granddaughter, alongside a familiar friend – Mickey Mouse. Watch the video here and find out more about the campaign here.
Here’s one way you can join in the festive campaign and help support our life-changing wishes.
At a time when many of us are missing precious moments with our family and friends, @Disney want to create a celebration of loved ones to let them know how much they mean to us - to bring us together while we can't be together. Share a photo of those who mean the most to you on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #LoveFromDisney and @Disney will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish on your behalf (up to $100,000 USD).
Please make sure that your post is set to public in order for Disney to be able to recognise it. Terms & Conditions apply. Please note that part of the funding from this social media activation will be going to the C-Fund for all Affiliates to have the opportunity to apply.
If you have any specific questions about the Disney partnership, please email Elise Murray, Corporate Alliances Manager at emurray@worldwish.org
Make-A-Wish International has been informed of a legacy which is expected in the new year of approximately $16,000. Including legacy giving as another way to support your work on all appropriate fundraising or campaign communications is important. Like most legacies, we were not aware of this special gift until we were informed by the executor. Developing a legacy message and opportunities to make it easier to consider supporting Make-A-Wish in this way. If you would like support in developing your legacy messaging, please contact Twyla Jenner – tjenner@worldwish.org
