Yuha Jo, 16, Acute myeloid leukaemia
“I wish to be a police officer”
Wish Day: 16 October 2020
Yuha wanted to be a police officer since she was young. However, when she was diagnosed with her disease, she gave up her dream because she thought she was weak, and not strong enough to be a police officer.
During her wish journey, the volunteers discovered her wish that she kept to herself, in her mind. Volunteers wanted to realize her dream and encourage her, so that she could take further steps to achieve her dream.
When the volunteers talked about ‘police officer’, Yuha’s eyes started to shine. She started to show her aspirations such as wearing a uniform, doing patrols, meeting an officer who struggled with a disease like hers, etc. All the things that she wished were coming true.
She wore a uniform, had a session to know how to be a police officer, tried shooting simulation, rode a car to patrol and met an officer who had a brain tumor, but still on duty.
After her wish day, Yuha said: “I was having a hard time and felt a bit depressed because I thought my dream was gone. But thanks to this wish-granting, I got hope and think about my dream and to keep going...”
Dear Colleagues,
I am inspired on a daily basis by stories of people caring for loved ones, making an impact to those in need and striving to do the right thing in their communities, and all of this in the face of daily stressors caused by the global pandemic….wait a minute, all of you at Make-A-Wish do this every day, even before the pandemic! Thanks to all of you for keeping the mission foremost in our constituents’ lives, even if it’s virtually!
We create and share this Quarterly Update so you can keep your hand-on-the-pulse of our global effort, accomplishments and timely announcements. I want to announce some important dates and conference changes so you can adjust your calendars and feel secure that the health and safety of our staff and boards is paramount in our planning.
Please save the date on your Zoom calendars for our next virtual CEO Summit on 18-19 May. We have sent an announcement about the Think-Tanks for planning FY 22 and beyond. These Think-Tanks will be key to helping us steer the direction and strategic imperatives that will advance us for the next 3-5 years, as we remain aware that we will still be facing some restrictions, limitations and challenges that could become structural. The CEO Summit will be a culmination of these Think-Tanks and provide the longer-term roadmap for the next phase of our growth and challenge us to deliver on new and innovative ambitions.
As for the Annual Leadership Conference in November, we have been carefully monitoring the current conditions related to the Coronavirus, and just as the health and safety of our wish kids is paramount, so is that of our employees. We have made the thoughtful decision to shift the 2021 Annual Leadership Conference to a virtual event and postpone the in-person conference and celebration to 2022.
Make-A-Wish America and Make-A-Wish International will be hosting the virtual conference November 1-4, 2021 (final dates tbc) which will be similar to what we did last year in October.
In the meantime, we will continue to exchange ideas, explore new ways of doing things, celebrate our mission and connect virtually. We are also foreseeing another CEO Summit in February 2022, hopefully IN-PERSON (keeping our ‘wishful’ thinking alive!) Something to look forward to!
Planning, strategizing and discussion groups are all essential to our growth, but if you read the Business Intelligence (BI) report below, you will notice that wish granting is dropping by 40-50%! Let’s all continue to embrace technology and be creative as we continue to push our life-changing mission forward by granting more wishes.
We will be celebrating World Wish Day next month which is our annual celebration of Chris Greicius’ wish which inspired the Make-A-Wish movement which today, encompasses the shining stars all around us—the people and organizations who have the power to bring renewed hope to children, families and communities who need it most. Together, they have helped Make-A-Wish transform countless lives over the past 41 years.
April 29th is our ‘birthday’, so let’s celebrate and lift the global consciousness by creating hope around the world with the message “Don’t Wait for Hope, Create it!” Helping more kids find hope is something we all have the power to do!
We have many opportunities before us. We need to continue to work together to bring these to fruition and see the tide rise, which will raise all ships! We will continue to drive change and to think about how we define success through the impact we are making, alongside growth and innovation. Our attitudes and actions matter. Our wishes matter.
Best wishes,
Dear Affiliate Community,
Last year, we had to implement a short-term ‘emergency’ strategic plan by adjusting our resources and deliverables to meet the uncertainty caused by the pandemic. Even though uncertainty continues, it is time to begin to turn our attention to the future. Luciano and the team will be reaching out through Think Tanks and the CEO Summit to engage your collective experiences, insights and innovation to forge ahead.
To stay relevant, we MUST continue to grant wishes.
Today, leadership is more critical than ever. As leaders, we need to collectively continue to reinforce and build a resilient organization. Meeting face-to-face this year will continue to be challenging, but we must not allow it to deter us from our mission.
The Board understands and empathizes with the stress and pressures that everyone is facing. We are here to support you as much as possible. I also want to appeal to the Affiliate Boards to support and encourage your teams to lean on you to help exploit local opportunities or cooperate to explore them at the regional or even global levels.
If I were to select three priorities for the foreseeable future, they would be:
Continue to drive the mission values and unified culture of Make-A-Wish
Fundraising
Wish Granting
April 29th is quickly approaching, and the anniversary of our founding is certainly a time to celebrate! Let’s make this year’s World Wish Day a resounding success!
I am encouraged by the roll-out of the vaccine worldwide, which gives me hope that we will be ‘seeing’ you very soon!
Best regards,
We are pleased to send you the Business Intelligence Report for Q4 2020 data. Thanks to all who have submitted their data, and have done it on time and with a high level of accuracy. There are two versions of the report - pdf and Word.
Our thanks to all of you and the Medical Advisory Committee for all the discussion and feedback on the medical eligibility criteria. We were given approval by the Board in February, so the new criteria may be found HERE.
The purpose of this list was to:
Reflect the clarification in the mission statement (critical illness)
Consider advances in medical treatment and care as some diseases are no longer life-threatening or life-altering
Come with an inclusive, consistent and practical list
For any questions related to this list, please email applelee@worldwish.org
The Affiliate Development and Support committee has recently granted permission to our UAE Affiliate to grant wishes in Egypt (in addition to Jordan and Yemen). Stay tuned for more updates as we bring you our first wish story from the continent!

All Latin American Affiliates received an in-kind donation from Samsonite. Samsonite believes in the power of a wish and believes in every part of the Wish Journey. They demonstrated this by giving each Affiliate Samsonite bags, pencil cases, lunch cases, and more – to transport every wish in their bags! Some Affiliates have used these gifts in the anticipation phase of the Wish Journey.
Make-A-Wish Mexico's volunteer team, led by Patricia Trejo (Volunteer Director) created a book called, “The Power of My Wish”. This book was edited with one goal in mind: to be a tool that makes it easy for volunteers to "create a link with Wish Kids, through games and activities, and make this experience one of the most important part of your life.” It explains the Wish Journey with great detail and fun activities, and even shows how children face emotions on their once-in-a-lifetime journey.
Argentina allied with an app called @UXart, who gave all our Latin American wish children the opportunity to take a picture with Santa... in a hologram!

Make-A-Wish Hong Kong is further advancing their usage and adoption of the Fundraising Cloud. By identifying opportunities to streamline processes, we are pleased to work collaboratively on solutions that benefit their local fundraising team.
We have formally kicked off the Volunteer Cloud onboarding with Make-A-Wish New Zealand and Make-A-Wish Greece. This module provides Affiliates with a centralized place to manage volunteer management activities. It also integrates across the Wish Cloud and Fundraising Cloud, allowing a full picture of all interactions across the organization.
Thank you to all Affiliates who engage and share their experiences! Feedback is always welcomed and appreciated.
The theme of this year’s World Wish Day campaign is “Don’t wait for hope, create it”.
This year, with the support from Make-A-Wish America, we managed to share the campaign guide in February! Our campaign guide webinars were hosted on Jan 25/26. The assets are being updated on a weekly basis and are shared with all Affiliates.
As World Wish Day is one of the most important global campaigns for Make-A-Wish, we encourage all Affiliates to join this campaign. There are many ways to participate in celebrating April 29th, World Wish Day!
If you have any questions about the World Wish Day campaign, please contact Lisa Zhao Lzhao@worldwish.org

We are working with 180DC, a global nonprofit organization which conducts market research. The objective of this market research is to have an overview of the market potential for Make-A-Wish International and international Affiliates in APAC and EMEA, and to better understand who are potential donors, and to know where and how to reach them through digital media channels. More details and findings will be shared in a few months.
New Donation Form project
The website was updated in November, and we are still optimizing the experience. As part of the experience optimization, we are working with our Tech team and a donation form partner, DonorBox on a new donation form. With the launch of the new donation form, we will be able to easily create customized donation forms (including, but not restricted to: change the default donation type/amount/currency, change the default affiliate designation, change the steps detail and style of the donation form, change the language, track the donation attribution by media channels, etc). All of these functions will give our marketing team more flexibility to conduct more tests, and thus increase the donation conversion rate. More learnings will be shared with Affiliates after we launch the form. Stay tuned!

We’re working through additional resources / materials with Disney, which Affiliates could use for Wish Anticipation. Watch this space!
We are delighted to have secured a US$500,000 grant this financial year from Disney at Make-A-Wish International. Especially during a challenging year, Disney continues to support our alliance globally. We are investing the grant in a number of strategic projects to support the Affiliate network. This includes investment in an Affiliate e-learning program, the CEO annual strategic workshop, our technology Wish & Volunteer clouds, data analysis, digital marketing and storytelling.
We have also set up a group of selected Affiliates (in discussion with Disney) to focus on the management / marketing / campaign planning for the partnership globally.
To note - Disney wish granting will not form part of this group’s remit, and we will continue to share Disney wish granting updates via the Wish Assist Focus Groups and other dedicated calls.
If you have any questions about the Disney partnership globally, please reach out to Elise Murray, Corporate Alliances Manager at emurray@worldwish.org
